Student’s Mission to Heal Others Creates Communitywide Impact

Family responsibilities altered her plans, but that didn’t stop Mimi Alliance ’22. After returning to college later in life, she is realizing her dream of a career in healthcare at UCF’s College of Nursing.

Mimi Alliance ’22 is advancing her lifelong dream to help and heal others as a doctoral student in UCF’s College of Nursing. This August, she will graduate with her doctor of nursing practice degree and begin her career as a family nurse practitioner.

But her journey hasn’t been simple or straightforward. After family struggles during her high school years caused her to alter her plans, she started down a different career path. Her dream stayed with her, though, and nearly two decades later, she returned to school at UCF to earn her bachelor of science in nursing and become a registered nurse.

Today Alliance serves as a graduate teaching assistant and mentor in the College of Nursing as she completes her doctoral degree, guiding other students as they pursue their own dreams.

The Anatomy of a Dream

“I thought I knew exactly what my future would look like. When I was 6 years old, I told my mom I wanted to be a doctor. I have always had a lot of drive, and I kept my eye on the prize,” Alliance says. “What I did not understand then was that healing was the dream.”

A first-generation college student, Alliance grew up in South Florida to parents who valued education deeply. They believed in hard work, personal responsibility and making the most of opportunities.

But life has a way of reshaping even the clearest plans. When her father suffered a stroke and her mother’s struggle with mental illness intensified, Alliance stepped into a world of responsibilities that she couldn’t have foreseen.

“I worked after school. I helped support my family. I kept moving forward. I did everything I believed I was supposed to do. And yet, medical school was not as straightforward as I once imagined,” Alliance says. “For a while, I questioned everything.”

Seeing the Future

That brought Alliance to UCF, where intention has led to impact.

“At the College of Nursing, I did not just continue my education. I felt lifted. I reclaimed my confidence. I rediscovered the version of myself who loves to learn, lead and heal,” she says.

Alliance spends her days at the Dr. Phillips Nursing Pavilion, one of UCF’s most innovative spaces and part of the university’s renowned Academic Health Sciences Campus in Lake Nona.

When she started, the state-of-the-art facility was still under construction. Today, it represents the future of nursing with new technology and places to connect and collaborate. In the heart of Lake Nona Medical City, it shares the campus with UCF’s College of Medicine, the UCF Burnett School of Biomedical Sciences and countless healthcare partners.

“It is built for where healthcare is going — and UCF is leading the way. We meet patients where they are,” Alliance says.

Pursuing Purpose

Alliance has found profound meaning and purpose as a student and practitioner in training.

She has been deeply involved with the UCF Health Mobile Clinic, which brings medical care to locations across Central Florida, serving those who might otherwise go without.

She also says that some of her most meaningful experiences have been working in the Veterans Administration hospital and in hospice settings.

“I have cared for veterans, for the elderly and for patients at the end of life — people who have given so much, yet are often unseen,” she says. “I have come to understand that healing is not just about treatment. It is about dignity, about presence and about honoring people for who they are.”

As a future family nurse practitioner, Alliance plans to build her career around those values, providing healthcare that considers the whole person.

“UCF has helped me find my path. This summer, I will graduate ready to serve,” she says.

A Career Filled with Promise

Alliance was recently selected to join the Orlando VA Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Residency Program this fall. And she just participated in her VA swearing-in ceremony, taking the oath as she begins her summer Family Nurse Practitioner practicum with the Orlando VA Healthcare System.

For Alliance, this long-held, hard-fought dream is finally her reality.

“This university does not just educate students. It strengthens them. It challenges them. It is a destination for them to step into who they are meant to become,” she says.

Alliance shared her story at UCF’s Go For Launch campaign liftoff event in February, demonstrating how UCF’s programs turn intention into impact for students and the community.

Go For Launch is propelling UCF into a bold future with support from donors, partners and community organizations who are investing in the university’s success for future generations.
