Where Momentum Begins: Tiffany Hughes and the Power of Showing Up

From front‑porch‑warmth to boardroom strategy, Hughes has spent nearly two decades turning conversations, connections and community into lasting impact at UCF.

Tiffany Hughes has never really believed in standing on the sidelines.

She talks fast, laughs easily and can turn a conversation about fundraising strategy into something that sounds more like a pep talk delivered from a front porch swing. But underneath the warmth is someone strategic, competitive and deeply committed to building something bigger than herself.

As co-chair of UCF’s Go for Launch Campus Leadership Team and a longtime leader within the newly named Barry S. Miller College of Business, Hughes sees momentum everywhere…in students…in faculty…in donors…and in the simple act of getting people into the same room and helping them believe in a shared future.

“We’ve got to do this together,” Hughes says. “You can’t ask donors and the community to give if your heart isn’t willing to give, too.”

That collaborative mindset has shaped nearly every chapter of her career.

A self-described “Marine brat,” Hughes spent parts of her childhood moving from place to place in a military family. Her father died in Vietnam, and her stepfather also served in the military. Eventually, her family settled in Jacksonville, where she later attended the University of North Florida.

From there, her career moved quickly. She worked with Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies, helped launch a company and built a professional life rooted in business development and relationship-building. Then life shifted again when her husband’s career brought the family to Central Florida.

At the time, Hughes assumed she would step away from full-time work to focus on raising her young daughter while doing consulting on the side. Instead, a chance conversation changed everything.

Her husband was mentoring a student in UCF’s professional selling program when Hughes attended an event and struck up a conversation with college leadership.

“If you can tell from my personality, I can talk,” she says with a laugh.

That conversation eventually led to a role supporting executive development and graduate programs within the College of Business. A few years later, Hughes again thought she was preparing to leave higher education behind. Then she met Dean Paul Jarley.

That meeting became another turning point.

Hughes says Jarley arrived with a vision for a “culture of engagement” that immediately resonated with her. At the time, she says, the college already had exceptional faculty, staff and students. What it needed was stronger connection and visibility.

“He had this vision to open up our doors,” Hughes says. “Create this culture of engagement. He called it, ‘Come visit us.’”

She was hooked.

Nearly two decades later, Hughes remains one of the college’s most recognizable champions, helping connect business leaders, alumni, students and faculty in ways that continue to expand the college’s reach and reputation.

That passion was especially visible during the recent announcement of alumnus Barry S. Miller’s historic $50 million gift to name the college. Hughes still gets emotional talking about it.

“I’m still grinning,” she says. “I cried at the event.”

For Hughes, the moment represented far more than a transformational donation. It symbolized belief. Belief in the college. Belief in UCF. Belief in what becomes possible when people invest in students and in each other.

She lights up talking about watching student ambassadors realize they would now graduate from a named college. She talks about the excitement that spread through faculty, university leadership and community partners throughout the day. Most of all, she talks about the humanity behind philanthropy.

“You just were in awe of the human who had decided to give to us,” she says of Miller.

That perspective is part of what makes Hughes such an effective advocate for Go for Launch. She understands the strategy behind advancement work, but she never loses sight of the people behind it.

Every lunch. Every student meet-and-greet. Every tailgate. Every conversation.

To Hughes, those moments matter because they build trust, community and possibility.

“That’s when the magic starts,” she says.
