The room bears the Willis family name.
For students who pass by, it may simply be another quiet place to study, collaborate or prepare for an exam. Few will know that decades before it became the Henry and Georgia Willis Family Study Room, another corner of the university library quietly changed two lives.
That’s where Henry Willis ’76 and Georgia Willis ’76 first met.
Neither could have imagined that a chance encounter between two UCF students, which was then known as Florida Technological University, would grow into more than 50 years of marriage, a growing family of Knights and a lifetime of support for the university that first brought them together.
Their story is rooted in gratitude.
“This university gave me a chance,” Henry Willis says simply.
For him, that chance was never guaranteed.
A Chance That Changed Everything
Growing up in Jacksonville, Henry admits he wasn’t the strongest student in high school. When college acceptance letters arrived, every university he applied to turned him away except UCF.
He completed his bachelor’s degree, proving something to himself along the way. Years earlier, a teacher had questioned whether he would even finish high school. Henry doesn’t tell that story with bitterness. Instead, he focuses on the opportunity UCF offered when few others did.
“They accepted me,” he says. “That meant everything.”
Georgia Willis’s path looked different. An Orlando transplant, she initially planned to enter the workforce after high school before deciding to enroll at UCF instead. Georgia also discovered that college isn’t always about following a straight line.
What neither expected was to find each other.
Their first memories together are rooted in campus life: studying, spending time in the student union and building a friendship that became a marriage. More than 50 years later, Georgia still remembers watching her husband confidently make his way into a circle of students engaged in conversation.
“I thought, ‘Wow,'” she recalls with a smile. “He just worked his way right into the discussion.”
Henry laughs, noting that he doesn’t remember the moment. Georgia never forgot it.
That dynamic still defines them today. Henry is the storyteller, eager to share memories and champion UCF whenever he can. Georgia offers quiet observations that reveal the heart of those stories. Together, they have built a life rooted in humility, generosity and family.
After graduation, Henry built a successful career in construction while Georgia devoted much of her life to raising their children and serving her community through church and local schools. They describe themselves not as wealthy but blessed — grateful for the life they built together.
That gratitude naturally found its way back to UCF.
A Family of Knights
Today, all three of their children are UCF alumni, and the tradition continues. Their oldest granddaughter will begin classes in January after completing dual enrollment in high school, becoming the third generation of Knights in the Willis family.
Henry hopes she’ll eventually wander into the library. Maybe she’ll notice the study room bearing her family’s name. Maybe she’ll realize that her parents, grandparents and other relatives all walked these same sidewalks before her. Maybe she’ll feel a little more connected to the university because of it.
For the Willises, that possibility is worth far more than having their names on a wall.
Passing Opportunity Forward
Their support extends well beyond a single gift. They remain active in alumni programs, volunteer through LIFE at UCF, attend university events and continue investing in the experiences that shaped their own lives.
Spend a few minutes with Henry and it’s impossible not to hear him talking enthusiastically about campus events, student opportunities or the university’s latest accomplishments. Georgia shares that excitement more quietly, but no less deeply.
They’ve watched UCF grow from a young university into one of the nation’s largest, yet they remain drawn to the same qualities that first made it feel like home: opportunity, community and the belief that education can change the course of a life.
In many ways, the Willis family story mirrors the university’s own. Both began with possibility and grew into something larger than anyone could have imagined.
The university gave two young students the opportunity to build an education, careers and a lifetime together. More than 50 years later, the Willises are extending that same opportunity to a new generation, ensuring today’s students have spaces to discover ideas, build friendships and perhaps even meet the person who will change their own lives.
Some gifts are measured in dollars. Others reveal their value over time, through decades of loyalty and a belief that what was once given is worth passing on.
For Henry and Georgia Willis, giving is both an expression of gratitude for the opportunity they received and an investment in the possibilities awaiting those who come next.
